While James waited for Nigel’s email, James got in touch with the Missing Persons Unit in the Gardaí and got a full list of all missing persons in Ireland. He then got in touch with the Missing Persons Section from the PSNI and got the full list of missing persons from them for Northern Ireland.

Nigel sent him the email around noon.

Attached to the email were several reports, one for each of the bodies. They were in a strange format; one James was not used to. The Independent Commission was made up of archaeologists, and the reports were written in professional language for fellow archaeologists. James had to take his time to ensure he collected all the necessary information.

All four of the unidentified bodies had been dumped in the 2000s. All had been placed in the bogwater, with a simple iron chain tied around them to ensure they sank to the bottom. All four victims were men, and all were dumped shortly after their killing. There was sufficient preservation of the bodies to show that they had been killed the same way, two bullets that were fired at point blank range through the occipital bone in the back of the head. The angle of the bullets’ entry showed that they were shot along a downward slope, as if the victims were on their knees when they were shot in the back of the head.

These were summary executions.

The bullets were the same for each of the dead, two 9x19mm Parabellum. The uniformity made clear that this was one person behind all four, a man following a process he understood very well.

The first murder was in April 2003, the second in February 2005, the third in June 2006, and the final killing was in August 2007.

James took out his missing persons list. He made the matches simply, once he had the dates.

Thomas Flanagan, aged fifty two, resident in Drimnagh, Dublin 12, was reported missing in April 2003. His girlfriend left him in the morning to drop their kid to school, and when she returned, she found evidence that the house had been broken into. Thomas was missing. Thomas had spent a combined fourteen years in prison across three sentences in the 1980s and the 1990s, one for aggravated assault, the other two for possession of heroin with intent to distribute.

Brian Lawlor, aged thirty-three, resident in Finglas, Dublin 11, was reported missing in February 2005. He left his local pub at three o’clock in the morning one night and was reported missing the next morning by his girlfriend. He’d recently been released from prison for burglary.

Jason Kenny, aged thirty-one, resident in Finglas, Dublin 11, was reported missing in June 2006. Two attempts were made on his life in the month prior to his disappearance and he had been warned by Gardaí that his life was in danger. He was reported missing by his wife.

Finally, aged thirty-four, Mark Murphy, also resident in Finglas, was reported missing in August 2007.

James was beginning to see a pattern.

James was NBCI.
